 The California State Bell The bell is located on grounds of the California State University campus in San Jose (aka "San Jose State"), across the quad from Tower Hall. The words and characters "California State Normal School A.D. 1881" are forged into the Bell's iron shell. |

One of the goals behind the CSU restoration movement in San Jose is to help revitalize San Jose’s moribund campus area and downtown. CSU alumni and student activists believe that restoring a more presitigious and geographically marketable identity in San Jose will help attract more residential students to the oldest CSU. This, they believe, will help revitalize the school’s sleepy campus and the broader downtown area. One of the many problems with the ”San Jose State” identity is its geographical restrictiveness, which tends to attract ”local” commuter students from the sprawling South Bay area. These students usually just drive to and from the campus for their classes and tend not to contribute to the vitality of the campus/downtown area. |
