California State Bell

About the California State Bell

The California State Bell is a blog and information website published by California State University (CSU) alumni and students.  The Bell blog focuses on historic preservation, reform and restoration within the CSU system, but particularly at San Jose State.

This website focuses on preservation of California State history and traditions and restoration of student, alumni and educator rights within the CSU system, particularly at San Jose State and the other campuses where students and alumni are not permitted to openly identify with the CSU.

This site is named after the California State Normal School Bell (A.D. 1881) on the San Jose campus. The Bell represents the school’s identity as the founding campus of the CSU system.

This site represents CSU students, alumni, professors and other Californians who believe that (1) the name of the great state of California, and (2) the history and identity of the original California State institution of higher learning in San Jose are valuable and prestigious assets. We believe those assets should be employed by the California State University for the benefit of  CSU students, graduates or educators in San Jose and beyond. We believe that the all CSU students and alumni should have the right to benefit from the power and recognition of their State’s name and the name of the California State University.

We believe any CSU student, alumni or professors, and particularly those at the oldest campus in San Jose, should have the right to identify and market themselves under the superior CSU brand name if they wish. To secure these rights we believe the school must a least partially restore its original “California State” identity (while maintaining a strong “San Jose” identity).  We advocate restoration of a balanced state-city identity and image for the oldest California State University (1862) campus (presently know as “San Jose State”).
