SAN JOSE, CA (Feb. 10, 2008) - In an extremely rare act of recognition of its original California State identity, San Jose State has given the California State Normal School bell a prominent new home on its campus.

It its new location beside Clark Hall the Bell is on a raised platform, making it easier to see from a distance.  The monument also features a plaque recognizing the "California State Normal School" name chiseled into the bell's iron shell. For the first time, the Bell is also mentioned on San Jose State's website, where it was previously completely ignored.

"Congratulations to San Jose State for finally recognizing the power of this symbol of the school's identity as the founding campus of the California State University system," said Michael Harold, founder of the CSU Alumni of Silicon Valley.  "We will ask the University to set up a fund so alumni and students can contribute to preserving this and other symbols of the school's identity as the first California State institution of higher learning."

The existence of pro-CSU activism on campus and the California State Bell website undoubtedly helped bring this about these changes, explains Michael Hentrich, a member of the CSU Students of San Jose.

The CSU Students is 300-plus member student activist organization that fought for the CSU Identity Student Initiative at San Jose State in March 2007.  More than 600 students voted, 25% of those who voted, cast their ballots for the Initiative to at least partially restore San Jose State's identity as a CSU campus.
