Oldest CSU Campus "Service Area" Limted to Santa Clara County
A CSU supporter graces the San Jose State campus in autumn. San Jose State recently announced cuts in its student enrollment for the 2009 school year. The TV coverage of this annoucement mentioned that the school's designated service area was just Santa Clara County, and that this was related to the number of students the school would be allowed to admit.
This confirms SJSU's status as a local commuter campus, and not a school that draws students from all over the state, as the founding campus of a major state university system would in most other states.
This also contradicts the claims of many San Jose State supporters that the school does play a broader geograhic role.
For an examples of the coverage, see the Silicon Valley Business Journal coverage:
http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2009/03/09/daily13.html?ana=from_rss
and the KCBS (San Francisco/Oakland) website:

CSU students and alumni from San Jose State who do support a broader and better role for the oldest CSU campus continue to work for changes at the school. For example, the Students for CSU | San Jose State continues to work for the civil rights of SJS students and alums to choose to identify with, and market themselves under, the California State University name.

Student Organization Website Publishing System Updated
September 3, 2008
San Jose State University appears to have temporarily pulled the plug on a number of the school's official student group websites recently, including that of the Students for CSU San Jose State, a group that advocates restoration of a CSU identity at the school.
Without notice from the University, the existing URL of the groups website no longer worked and it was not possible to navigate to the location of the student sites on the www.sjsu.edu website.
When the group's executives asked for an explanation, school officials claimed to be unaware of the problem. Shortly after the Students for CSU - San Jose State website reappeared at this address under an updated Club management system: Students for CSU - San Jose State .
It appears that some other student group websites may also have been similarly affected. Stay tuned to the California State Bell blog for updates. |
